Coccidia

Dr. Bruce spent most of his morning looking for these.

For those of you who aren't microbiologists - this is a picture of coccidia, a parasite which rabbits can get, and which we are always concerned about at our foster homes. It's a parasite every bunny parent should check for periodically, as it can cause health problems. You can find a good article about coccidia here: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/coccidia.html

To check for this parasite, you will need to take a fresh sample of bunny poop to your vet. They will do what is called a "fecal float test", which will reveal the coccidia, if it is present. They can also prescribe the medication your bunny will need to get rid of this nasty critter!!

Since we have so many foster bunnies, we're lucky that we have our very own biologist who can do our tests for us. Every three months Bruce brings a sample from each bunny to his lab. We really appreciate his doing this for us (and I'm sure our vet does, too - since otherwise her techs would be tied up for hours with our samples!)

If we find a bunny has coccidia, we bring them in to our vet for a confirmation test and a prescription. They need to be rechecked in several weeks to make sure the parasite has been eradicated.

Today's test results? I'm happy to say that every bunny is negative!!! No coccidia here, at least not this time around!!

Opal was very happy to hear about her negative result. Now she can get back to the important work of playing with her Bunspace toys!!

Foster Bunny of the Week: Eddie

Foster bunny of the week: Eddie!! Eddie (who is of course nicknamed "Eddie Spaghetti"!) is a lovable goofball of a bunny! He is interested in everything and everyone, but is somewhat calmer than his brother Boomer. Both bunnies came in with a large group surrendered to our local animal services this summer. They are about seven months old and lots of fun!

Eddie loves toys and was very happy with his Bunspace bag - in fact, even the bag itself was a great toy for Eddie. He is very good at amusing himself with simple things like paper bags and paper towel tubes.
Eddie is a lot of fun - wouldn't you love this little guy in your home?

More Bunspace Bag Fun!!

More fun with Bunspace bags!! We're getting all the photos sorted out - there were a lot!!
The coffee filters stuffed with dried fruit were a big favorite. Here, Opal is checking out the contents!
Esmeralda made short work out of the dried fruit, and then was on to the tube stuffed with hay. It kept her busy for several hours.

"Hmmmmm. What's in here? Can we both fit in at once?!" Memphis and Brooklyn do everything together, including checking out the Bunspace bag!!And the results? Two very happy bunnies with lots of fun loot!!

More Bunspace Bags!!

We had fun on Saturday handing out many of the Bunspace gift bags to our very deserving foster bunnies. I'm still sorting out photos - we had several photographers and it was like the paparazzi came to the HFR foster home!!

A good time was had by every bunny and some of them got quite wild with the bags!!

I just uploaded a bunch of videos to YouTube - our channel is at:

Guinness And His Bunspace Bag

videoWe have another happy recipient of a Bunspace bag - Guinness!! Christy came over the other night and we just couldn't wait to give out the bags. Guinness was looking a little depressed, so he was the happy recipient.

Maybe a little too happy - when he smelled all the treats inside, he dived right inside the bag! Christy and I had to rescue him!!

He really enjoyed all the treats. A few folks are coming over today and we'll be giving out the rest of the bags, so look forward to some more happy bunny photos!!

Bunspace Bags For Buns!!

A big box arrived at here yesterday, addressed to the foster bunnies. What could be inside?!!

Why it was a huge bunch of Bags For Buns treat bags from the kind folks at Bunspace!!
For those of you who don't know about Bunspace ( http://www.bunspace.com/) , it is the social networking site for rabbits. It's kind of like Myspace, but for bunnies!! The people who run Bunspace are very good to those of us in the rescue community and let us list our adoptable foster bunnies on the site.
They also have a Bags for Buns program at the holidays. With help from donations from the community they make treat bags for bunnies in foster programs. Last year the program went to a limited number of rescues, but this year it was opened up a bit more, and we were asked if we would like our foster bunnies to receive treat bags. Of course we said yes!!
It was such a thrill to open the box. There was a letter from the Bunspace folks, a wonderful 2011 Rabbit calendar (if you need a calendar, you should definately check this one out - it's beautiful! http://bunspace.3dcartstores.com/Bunspacecom-Rabbit-Calendar-2011_p_44.html ) and.....the treat bags!! They each contained an assortment of toys - hay stuffed t.p. roll, wooden toss toy, vine ball, willow ring, birdie bagel, dried fruit wrapped in an unbleached coffee filter (I love this one!), a timothy pumpkin cookie, and/or chew sticks.
I want to share the fun with some of our other members so I'm waiting for next weekend to hand them all out, but one of our bunnies needed a bag right away. Little Savannah got spayed on Wednesday, and came home from the vet feeling...a little too frisky! She chewed out a stitch before she even left the vet's office, so they e-collared her. On the way home she got the e collar off, so when we got home I put it on her again. She took it off. I put it back on. The next time I went to check on her, she was wearing it as a skirt. Fashionable, but unacceptable.

Clearly Savannah needed a diversion, so she got her Bunspace bag early!! Look at all those toys!!!
The kind folks at Bunspace asked for nothing in return except for pictures of the bunnies enjoying their bags, so here is little Savannah trying to decide what to have first (she went for the Timothy pumpkin cookie). The last time I checked on her, she was pushing around the toss toy, her e collar intact. Sigh - thank you Bunspace!!!
More pictures will be up as soon as we distribute the rest of the bags. And for those of you looking to contribute to a good cause - please think about donating to Bags For Buns next year. It makes such a difference to the foster bunnies!!!

Santa Loves Bunnies!

Santa loves bunnies!! Yes, Huntsville Friends of Rabbits invited Santa to our annual holiday party, and of course, he couldn't say no to a bunch of adorable bunny boys and girls!! Member's bunnies as well as the HFR foster bunnies got to say hi to Saint Nick, and have their photos taken, too!!
More photos are on our Facebook page in our Santa Loves Bunnies 2010 photo album: http://www.facebook.com/HuntsvilleBunnies

New Website!!!

Thanks to our wonderful member, Christy H., we now have a new website!! Parts of still under construction, but what is finished is wonderful!! Thank you Christy - you are really "bunderful"!!!

To view the new site please go to: www.huntsvillefriendsofrabbits.com

Because we now have a website, this blog will now be....a blog!! We have been using it as a pseudo-website for several years now, and it will be great to have it as an actual news site. So much happens in our little group - a blog is the perfect way to tell the world!

Action Alert!!

Action Alert!

June and July were busy months for Huntsville Friends of Rabbits!! Too busy!

Two large groups of bunnies were brought into Huntsville Animal Services. In June, a group of 20 rabbits, mostly babies, were brought in. Unfortunately seven of the babies, including six one day olds, did not survive. The other 13 were taken in by us as they were too young to be adopted out, and the two adults needed veterinary care.
In July, another group of 14 came in! Two adult females (including sweet Bella, the white bunny with black stripes in the photo) and 12 babies were in this group. Again, they were too young to be adopted out. Huntsville Animal Services did not feel they could keep this group at the shelter and so, to avoid them being euthanised, we took them in, too!
We're happy to say that, although they have been a lot of work, everyone has been doing fine and the babies are now old enough and healthy enough to spay/neuter. We are posting them for adoption on our Petfinder site (
http://www.huntsvillebunnies.petfinder.com/ ). They are very funny and cute!!

Getting to see goofy antics like these two boys (Boomer and Spike) laying on top of their brother, Charlie, has made all the work worthwhile!
